Rural Arts In Science Education (RAISE) designs and delivers workshops, group activities and projects for schools and school lessons around the themes of sustainable development, biodiversity, conservation, human biology, nutrition, agriculture, botany, mycology, entomology, environment, ecology, evolution, genetics and the working of science.

Scientist in residence Dr. Christian Taylor is a biologist, science teacher, entomologist and mycologist. He is also passionate about sustainable lifestyles and the development of the sustainable farming economy this planet so urgently requires. In 2008 the Food Standards Agency awarded Christian with the Dame Sheila McKechnie award for his development of community food initiatives. He studied Applied biological science at University of Bath, during which he became passionate about fungi and sustainable agriculture. He volunteered in Ladakh, India, for International Society for Ecology and Culture's farm programme. On his return he studied for his doctoral thesis on the ecological relationships between insects and fungi under the stewardship of Dr. Alan Rayner before moving down to Devon to instigate local food and sustainable agriculture projects such as South Devon Communnity Supported Farming Group (CSF)., Landmatters Permaculture Cooperative and Beenleigh Meadows Farm.

Christian is a qualified science teacher (PGCE / QTS) teaching courses on environmental science and ecosystems at The Open University and teaching biology A-level and International Baccalaureate at Plymouth College.
